Press Release from the American College of Physicians, April 23, 2004

"ACP Medicine," Multimedia Medical Reference, to Debut

PHILADELPHIA -- (April 23, 2004) The American College of Physicians announces the introduction of ACP Medicine, an evidence-based internal medicine diagnosis and treatment reference published by BC Decker. Developed from BC Decker® Scientific American® Medicine,
ACP Medicine is continually updated and is available in several print and electronic formats.

"ACP Medicine is a comprehensive medical reference that meets the high standards of ACP and complements our existing clinical information and education products," said John Tooker, MD, MBA, FACP, ACP Executive Vice President and CEO.

"ACP Medicine has an outstanding editorial board and a distinguished group of over 200 chapter authors. Its editorial content will be further enhanced by the addition of a peer review process similar to other ACP publications and educational products," said Dr. Tooker. ACP information resources for internal medicine include Annals of Internal Medicine, the Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP), and PIER (Physicians' Information and Education Resource), a Web-based decision support tool.

ACP Medicine is a unique clinical reference that is delivered in a variety of formats. It is available as a quarterly updated CD-ROM, in a loose leaf binder edition with monthly updates, and in the most up-to-date format as ACP Medicine Online. In addition, ACP Medicine will be published periodically in bound volume print editions. Future plans call for the integration of ACP Medicine content into other ACP electronic products, enabling practicing internists to explore clinical topics on a variety of levels, from individual decision support to encyclopedic background on a condition. BC Decker is the leading provider of services that help physicians, consumers, providers and health plans navigate the complexity of the healthcare system.

BC Decker products and services streamline administrative and clinical processes, promote efficiency and reduce costs by facilitating information exchange and communication between healthcare participants. BC Decker also owns and publishes ACS Surgery: Principles and Practice, the first and only online, continually updated comprehensive general surgical reference that speaks to the urgent and critical treatment decisions practicing surgeons make daily. ACS Surgery is the official textbook of the American College of Surgeons, the largest surgical association in the world, with which BC Decker has a similar publishing partnership. Both of these BC Decker Professional References are available to the medical community by subscription, and can be accessed by Medscape members from within their homepage on Medscape from BC Decker as well as directly from the publication websites.

The American College of Physicians was founded in 1915 to promote the science and practice of medicine. In 1998 it merged with the American Society of Internal Medicine, which was established in 1956 to study economic aspects of medicine. ACP works to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine. ACP membership includes more than 115,000 internists, medical residents, fellows and students. Internists specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults.
