ACP Medicine

Beginning July 2011 to June 2012:
  • Kiran Musunuru, MD, PhD, MPH, is our new Associate Editor, Education.
  • The weekly emails will be sent out Mondays. Cases and questions are no longer included in the emails.
  • The schedule of weekly topics will also include a multiple-choice question (MCQ) review.

SCOPE OF WEEKLY CURRICULUM
The ACP Medicine Weekly Curriculum is a convenient email-based system that guides residents through an ongoing study of the key elements of internal medicine and patient care from ACP Medicine, an official publication of the Americal College of Physicians. Our Weekly Curriculum schedule is prepared by Kiran Musunuru, MD, PhD, MPH, to correspond with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Certification Examination Blueprint.

HOW IT WORKS
Each week, program directors (PDs) and their residents receive an email alerting them that the new Weekly Curriculum has been published live online. The email contains a tip and goals relating to a chapter and questions published in ACP Medicine. The email also contains a link to the chapter. Residents review the chapter, click on the convenient ACP Medicine link in the email, access the Weekly Curriculum tab at the top of the screen, and enter their user name and password. Weekly Curriculum consists of two sets of four to five questions based on information presented in an ACP Medicine chapter. The residents can take the weekly test online and receive immediate feedback on their scores, with detailed discussions of the topics and the answers, as well as access to the full text of the related chapters for additional review.

WHAT'S NEW

We welcome Kiran Musunuru, MD, PhD, MPH, as our Associate Editor of Education. Kiran is an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and works at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

The Weekly Curriculum emails will be sent out Mondays. In addition, the schedule of weekly topics will include an MCQ review, which will consist of a selection of questions presented over the last few weeks on a specific topic.

We will continue to provide two sets of questions tailored to junior and senior residents. These two tracks afford increased exposure to topics and conditions encountered in residency training and will give trainees additional experience with multiple-choice format questions. The cases and questions are no longer included in the emails.

  • Junior-level program for PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents will focus on medical knowledge and clinical topics
  • Senior-level program for PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents will present more advanced clinical topics

ENHANCED LOG BOOK
The log book remains entirely confidential and is accessible only by the individual resident and his or her PD. Scores will accumulate week by week and a profile of results will be generated. Currently, only personal profiles are available; in the months ahead, Weekly Curriculum will provide metrics on an individual's performance within their program, as well as nationally.

PDs can access a confidential log book-a separate, secure site that allows PDs to track residents' progress and performance. Via the log book, PDs are able to

  • sort and select each resident's test or range of tests by completion date;
  • print entries—date and name of test, scores, total number of questions, and completion date; and
  • store bookmarks to monitor tests in progress and indicate where a resident left off in partially completed tests.
We hope you appreciate and benefit from the extensive changes to the Weekly Curriculum and encourage your feedback on how to improve the program even further.
